The M Series is BMW’s high performance versions of select production models and includes the M1 coupe, the M3 (E30, E36, E46, and E90), the M5 (E28, E34, E39, and E60/E61), the M6 (E24 and E63), and the M Coupes and Roadsters (based on both the Z3 and Z4).

M1 BMW Pictures The M1 was a road-legal version of the BMW M division’s racing coupe produced between 1978 and 1981. Only 456 M1 production models were ever built, in addition to 7 prototype models. A modified version of the M1’s engine was resurrected for the E28 M5.

M3 BMW Pictures The M3 was first produced in 1986 as a high performance version of the E30 platform 3-Series sedan. All generations of the 3-Series since then have received the M3 treatment (the E36, E46, and E90/E92/E93 platforms).

M5 BMW Pictures The original M5 was produced in 1984 and was based off of the contemporary 535i chassis and powered by a modified version of the M1’s engine. There has been an M5 produced for each 5-Series generation since then, including the E28, E34, E39, and E60.

M6 BMW Pictures The first M6 was produced in 1983 and was based off of the E24 6-Series platform. The M6’s first run ended in 1989 and was brought back in 2005 on the E63 platform, just after the 2003 return of the 6-Series. The E63 is the currently produced M6 model.

M-Coupe BMW Pictures The M-Coupe has had two production runs in its history. The first was between 1998 and 2002 and was based on the Z3 coupe and the second was from 2006-present and is based off of the current Z4 coupe.

M-Roadster BMW Pictures The M-Roadster was produced alongside the M-Coupe (from 1998-2002 based on the Z3 and from 2006 to present based on the Z4) and is virtually identical from the windshield forward. Behind that, the M-Roadster has extra supports to lend increase rigidity.
